>> reporter: this was a very tragic day for santa maria. and the scene at the sports center, where the families and friends have gathered to try to identify the bodies, was very desolating. throughout the day, trucks carried the bodies to the site. because it is quite large, it was the only place in the city that had the capacity to actually be a solution for the tragedy that happened because there wasn't a morgue that could take in such a number. >> are you hearing any more about the setup inside the club that there wasn't easier access for people to get out? >> reporter: yes, exactly. lots of witnesses were speaking out it was a desperate situation for them, not to get out. not being able to see far because of the smoke. and on top of that, some witnesses have said that actually security guards stood in their way in the beginning because there was lots of confusion. they didn't understand quite

what was happening. >> can you tell us a bit about this nightclub, in terms of the popularity? >> reporter: this is one of the most popular nightclubs here. people here have told me, it's called kiss. lots of young people go there. and lots of students. i was told that alone from this public university, about 50 students were killed. >> and news of the nightclub fire hit hard back here at home. a very similar tragedy took 100 lives at a nightclub in rhode island in 2003. pyrotechnics being used by the band great white set the ceiling on fire, trapping hundreds inside. since then, fire codes have been made much more strict in that state, as well as in others. of course, we'll have the very latest, live from brazil, coming up later today on "good morning america." now, to immigration reform. it's getting a lot of attention this week from washington's power players. new proposals are being unveiled today. and they contain some

controversial ideas. abc's preeti arla has more. good morning, preeti. >> reporter: good morning, sunny. eight republican and democratic senators have met several times since the november election to work on this plan. and while they came to an agreement, there is still much more work to do. but still, some say it's a big step in the right direction. it's a hot-button issue coming to the forefront again, immigration reform. a bipartisan group of senators, four democrats and four republicans, have now unveiled a plan to tackle it. >> we can't go on forever with 11 million people living in this country in the shadows in an illegal status. >> reporter: the plan by the so-called gang of eight senators, lays out ways to address some of the big issues. it has a path to citizenship for undocumented workers and strengthening border security. >> we've virtually been going for about 25 years without a clear statement about immigration policy. that's unacceptable in this nation of immigrants. >> reporter: tomorrow, president

obama heads to las vegas to unveil his own immigration perform plan. the president promised that perform during the 2008 campaign. but failed to deliver it during his first term. with seven of ten latino voters supporting president obama in the 2012 election, republicans now appear more willing to play ball. >> there's a new appreciation on both sides of the aisle, including, maybe more importantly on the republican side of the aisle. >> americans support it, in poll after poll. latino voters expect it. thirdly, democrats want it. and fourth, republicans need it. >> reporter: and as washington prepares to act, some states are taking actions on their own. illinois became the fourth state to allow illegal immigrants to get driver's licenses. sunny, back to you. >> preeti arla in washington. thank you so much. getting a lot of attention this morning, the president and hillary clinton sitting down together. we'll have the highlights from that interview coming up in

about 15 minutes. now, we turn to the nuclear tension stemming from the korean peninsula. this morning in seoul, a spokesman said south korea will do whatever it takes to stop north korea from conducting a new nuclear test. north korea's main ally, china, is urging restraint. and is promising to cut food aid to north korea if it goes ahead with another test. and the alleged mastermind of the 9/11 attacks, khalid sheikh mohammed, will be among five defendants making courtroom appearances at guantanamo bay. it begins four days of hearings, where two dozen motions will be argued. all of the defendants are facing the death penalty. we're seeing frightening pictures from what could have been a disaster in turkey. a streak of light across the sky last week was actually a jet airliner's burning engine. 114 people were onboard the turkish airline flight.

welcome back, everybody. well, stores can now charge you extra for using a credit card. merchants have always paid fees when customers use credit cards. but now, a court ruling says they can pass on as much as 4%. it's unlikely, though, that many will. it would, of course, annoy many customers. and ten states have laws prohibiting the surcharges. there are no fees, though, for debit card use.

toyota is back on top. the japanese automaker is once again the world's biggest automaker. it sold nearly 10 million vehicles last year, beating general motors and volkswagen. all three automakers posted gains from a year ago. toyota lost the top spot after the tsunami in japan and recalls in the u.s. it will cost an extra penny to mail a letter or a postcard this morning. the first class rate is now 46 cents for a letter, 33 cents for a postcard. but the price for mailing a letter to canada or mexico is up 25 cents. also, priority mail is up but now includes free tracking. >> just make it 2 bucks apiece. "hansel & gretel: witch hunters" stuffed the movie competition into the oven this weekend. the r-rated update was tops at the box office. its take was less than bewitching. "hansel & gretel" took in $19 million its opening weekend. "mama" which you saw and liked

today. rescuers with boats were on the river last night after the plane crashed into the icy water. a man and a woman onboard were pulled out of the water half an hour after going in. they are listed in fair condition. the crash is under investigation. and the mississippi river near vicksburg, mississippi, is closed this morning following a barge accident. the barge, which was carrying 80,000 gallons of oil hit a railroad bridge. it's unclear how much oil spilled into the water. but it was seen three miles downstream. we have new details about the murder case of jonbenet ramsey. the murder at her parents' house on christmas in 1996 remains unsolved. but now, reports say a grand jury had voted to indict jonbenet's parents, john and patsy ramsey. however, the district attorney refused to sign that indictment, believing he could not prove the case beyond reasonable doubt. and this morning a

nationwide hunt is on for the man in gray. u.s. marshals say he's a dangerous career criminal who keeps escaping from jail. he was inside the wayne county jail in detroit for six days before he walked out last week. before that escape, he left a jail in phoenix the very same way. and turning to sports this morning, the pro bowl game was played under the sunny skies of hawaii yesterday. but was it for the last time? >> let's hope so. it wasn't even close. the nfc trounced the afc. 62-35. but both teams did seem to be trying out there. the game is a sort of side show to the super bowl. and nfl commissioner roger goodell has questioned whether it should return. and, rob, speaking of the super bowl, the 49ers arrived in new orleans last night, accompanied by their families. they'll have a week to practice there and get ready for sunday's big game. it's san francisco's first super bowl appearance in 18 years. and coach jim harbaugh says the team is super happy to be there.
